Hello all,
Called MOE this afternoon - left a message and will call daily until
we get an answer as we still have not received a confirmation of our
letter. As soon as we do, we'll let you know and will post it on
www.sensociety.org/SLAMSS.htm Meanwhile, here is important
information regarding upcoming events.
1) SEAS: This group will be presenting present a brief regarding the
need for their regional district to take action regarding issues
related to Shuswap Lake water quality on February 15th at 11:30 a.m.-
As you know their moratorium on dumping effluents in the lake ends
Nov 2007. We know that having lots of people makes a big difference
so if you have time, please show up. Russ and I will try to go and
could take 2-3 more people in our car or could carpool with others.
Let me know if you want to carpool or take people. It is at: Columbia
Shuswap Regional District - 781 Marine Park Drive NE - Box 978 -
Salmon Arm, BC - V1E 4P1
2) SENS: will be having a public meeting on WATER QUALITY on Feb 22nd
in Vernon at the Schubert Centre at 7 pm. Interior Health and NORD
will be there, Shuswap Lake Coalition, SLAMSS (that's us) and maybe
others. We'll each make a short presentation showing our concerns,
then there will be discussion with the hope of drafting a petition we
can give the government that would ensure no more dumping in our
lakes and rivers. Please show up as your thoughts should be
represented - if you can't go, send me your thoughts ahead of time.
It's free.
My feeling is we should wait for the outcome of those meetings before
deciding on a demonstration - What do you think?
3) Don't forget David Suzuki will be in Kelowna on Feb 25th at 7 p.m.
google David suzuki tour for more info.
4) As well, I have borrowed the film "Crapshoot" which looks at what
happens to sewage - it is a must see for everybody who cares (and we
all should). Please let me know if you would like to borrow it and
organize a showing in the area. Finally, if you have info you want to
share with the mailing list, you can now directly email
lookoutsugarlake at sensociety.org and it will automatically go to the
moderator for approval and then be sent to the mailing list at large.
5) Building Environmentally: In addition to water treatment,
environmental buildings reduce water intake significantly by using
composting toilets (some use NO water at all while others use 3 oz
per flush - but all generate compost as output) and treating their
grey water then reusing it. An excellent example in BC is the KC Choi
Building at UBC in Vancouver - It is not even connected to the city
sewers!
See: http://www.iar.ubc.ca/choibuilding/matsuzaki.html and
http://www.clivusmultrum.com/ and http://www.cityfarmer.org/
comptoilet64.html
As well those buildings can now be certified environmental according
to the LEED standards (meaning Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Designs) so we have all it takes to push for environmental
developments on Sugar lake. You can also check out
www.sensociety.org and click on the Smart Growth link for more info.
I've also received information from many of you who are or would like
to be involved with green buildings - Why don't we put together a
brochure on all Cherryville and Lumby area "green" services and
products? We could put it on the website and maybe invite everyone to
come and show their products and services at the public market this
Spring or at another venue? What do you think of the idea?
Huguette
