GOOD NEWS!
The Ministry of Transport has refused to give the Lookout Development
at Sugar Lake the permit it needs for the proposed idevelopment,
saying that the road past the bridge was never meant for such dense
traffic, that the maintenance that would be needed for this intensive
traffic on the roads leading to the resort is not in their plans,
that the planned resort must first meet the needs expressed by
Interior Health, and that the roads on the resort itself are not in
accordance with regulations.
So what will happen now? According to Interior Health, the current
septic system is quite good as it has lots of vertical but given the
nature of the soil, effluents eventually reach the river. If the
source of the effluent is benign, the percolation time should be
sufficient, but harsh inputs or too much sewage can be a problem.
What will happen now?
NORD has scheduled a meeting with our MLA on Monday to clarify the
current status and plan so that future similar problems don't occur.
They have asked me to attend. I asked to bring others but they want
to keep the meeting small and informative so requested that only one
or two other persons attend. I suggested Barbara Fresz as she's
already attended meetings at NORD with me and can represent Cherryville.
Please let me know if you have any thoughts you want to make sure are
expressed on Monday. So far, our message is the same: We are not
opposed to development per say, but opposed to developments that are
destructive of our water and environment. If UBC at Vancouver can
build a whole green building in the middle of the city, we should
follow the example in an area such as Sugar Lake where the soil is
fragile and the water a drinking reservoir. As far as avoiding this
in the future, a Water Basin Board? A water rep on the APC? Another
meeting among us to discuss any suggested ideas?
Your thoughts will be appreciated,
Huguette
