Hi active SLAMSS!

You are getting this email because you've been actively suggesting
solutions or providing information concerning the issue we've all
been fighting for, which is keeping our water clean. Although the
Kokanee lodge issue is not yet won, we've made a lot of progress in
sensitizing politicians and in gathering a strong group of supporters
for clean water. We've now got a good communication system, with our
email listserv and the website. It would be a shame to lose the
momentum we have gained.

I have tried to make a complete list of the main issues that need
addressing if we are to keep protecting our water -Please let me know
what you think - Is the list incomplete or does it contain things
that you consider unimportant? As for me, I have decided to focus on
the issue of pharmaceuticals and care products that enter our water
and am working almost exclusively on that these days. Russ is working
on the problem of land privatization around reservoir lakes and also
on the crowded range lease issues.

Do you feel there is one or more issues you'd like to look out for
and focus on in particular? I'm thinking that there are now many
really important issues happening that I'm not following up on, and
it would be great if we knew that all these issues are at least
brought to our attention. That way we could at least keep each other
informed of the major problems happening or lurking ahead, advising
each other on how to tackle them, and organizing presentations, media
campaign, petitions or/and demonstrations, to solve those problems.

Please let me know what you think - and also let me know if there is
anyone in the area whom you consider is

List of Issues that need to be addressed to protect our water & names
of people currently working on the issue:

1. Effluents in water (including the problem of pharmaceuticals and
personal & home-care products through direct or indirect discharges)
- Huguette

2. Watershed land protection (through opposing privatization of land
next to reservoir lakes) - Russ

3. Abusive logging on the watershed -

4. Abusive ranching on the watershed -

5. Abusive applications of fertilizer, pesticides and fire retardants
on the watershed -

6. Unchecked motorized recreation on the watershed (problems with
gasoline, oil and other garbage left up there near creeks, aquatic
bird habitat and shoreline, etc...) -

7. Increased human development and road construction -

We have material to send anybody who wants to focus on these issues -
it includes A) Definition of the problems these issues cause B)
Suggested solutions C) groups that already address these problems D)
list of media where to send information E) list of government bodies
we can pressure

Looking forward to your feedback and hoping we'll make Cherryville &
Lumby the first BC communities where we prize our Gross National
Happiness more than our Gross National Product!

Huguette
