Hi all,
Shuswap Lake has enormous pollution problems due to many sources.
I've received this email asking us to help them oppose another huge
marina and thought you might be interested in seeing what is in store
once those types of developments occur.
As you remember, the Shuswap Water Action Team strongly supported
SLAMSS by signing our petition and sending us information that helped
with our presentation. If you can, please take a minute to support
them by sending a letter.

> Another Major Marina Expansion proposed for Blind Bay #304827 and
> #0256203
>
> Applications have been submitted for a huge expansion of the marina
> and private boat docks at the former Timber Cove Campground and
> Blind Bay Restaurant site. The development is under the name of
> “La Baia Resort and Spa”.
>
> The applications would extend the marina 444 ft into the lake and
> would be 325 ft wide. It will have 130+ boat slips most of which
> will be private for their proposed condo development.
>
> If this marina expansion is approved along with the other marina
> applications in the bay there will be over 550 boats anchored in
> the bay. Boats have bilge pumps that often discharge boat grunge,
> oil and gas into the lake from leaks and rain water. We are told
> that 1 litre of gasoline contaminates over 1000 times its volume.
> Some larger boats even discharge their grey water, and boat owners
> often wash and clean their boats in place.
>
> The bay is the drinking and swimming reservoir for thousands of
> residents. Government studies indicate it is already under serious
> pollution pressures. The Environment Ministry's recent water
> monitoring studies show that Blind Bay is one of the areas of
> greatest pollution concern due to its shallow water and high
> density development.
>
> Lower mainland residents do not allow anyone near their drinking
> water reservoirs (i.e. Capilano and Seymour). They are even fenced
> off and secured. The city of Calgary will not allow motor boats or
> swimming in their drinking water reservoir (Glenmore Dam). The
> Blind Bay reservoir is like a shallow lake which does not turn over
> very often so contaminants can easily build up.
>
> Other issues associated with this application include:
> The Blind Bay Community has been working hard to prevent
> commercialization of the bay and to retain the residential nature
> of the area and waterfront.
> There will be significant safety issues for boat traffic, and
> swimming safety.
> This foreshore is classed as a Char and Sockeye Salmon Spawning
> area and is a bird sanctuary under the hunting regulations
> The marina expansion will also seriously encroach on the foreshore
> of existing residents.
>
> Your help is urgently needed to prevent massive expansions such as
> this in sensitive areas.
>
> Please write or email by the deadline of May 31 to the Integrated
> Land Management (ILMB) office in Kamloops, and the CSRD Board of
> Directors in Salmon Arm. Both these agencies have decision making
> authority over such applications. (letters can be submitted by more
> than one adult per residence).
