[LookOutSugarLake] Logging in Riparian Zone

Good day,

Below is an answer received from Mike Reiner, Ministry of Environment
(thank you Mike for your prompt answer) regarding the concerns
expressed in the email I had sent (see below). As you can see from
the photos, logging is being done by Kokanee Lodge right in the
riparian zone of Sugar Lake just above the dam.

Members of SLAMSS - Sugar Lake And Middle Shuswap Stewards - are asking:

1. The Ministry of Forest and Range and ILMB:
How come there was a tenure granted over this parcel of land when so
many people objected to ILMB at the land being granted at all, and
specifically objected to it being logged since it is so close to the
lake AND will contain a septic field that will surely enter the lake
very rapidly

2. NORD:
Why would NORD allow such "management" of the riparian zone?

3. DFO:
The Middle Shuswap River has been stocked with salmon fries and is
already a salmon habitat below Wilsey Dam for Chinook and Coho
(endangered) - why would DFO not intervene to prevent habitat
destruction in the headwaters of that sensitive ecosystem?

Finally, can anyone please explain to us whether the Riparian Area
Regulations have changed for everyone or whether there is a special
status one must have in order to log in them?

Huguette Allen.
