TREE PLANTING PROJECT
Deforestation, huge forest fires and urbanization present major threats to the world’s trees.
Perhaps you would like to join this SENS initiative and plant trees, that will collectively reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and combat the threat of global warming. Either as an individual, or with friends, or as a class, try to plant as many trees as you can.
IDEAS TO GET THE PROJECT UNDERWAY:
Source sponsorship from a major business in your area
Work with a non-profit organization
Contact reforestation companies in your location for tree donations
See if any local nurseries will donate some trees
Choose trees that will thrive in your area eg: hybrid poplar, weeping willow, aspen, red maple (all are fast growing trees) or a variety of coniferous species.
Plant in spring or fall
Consider a greening of the school grounds project.
PREPARING EACH TREE PLANTING SITE
Dig a hole at least 15 centimeters (6 inches) wide and deep enough to accommodate the roots
Make sure there are no weeds immediately around the planting area
Gently compress the soil around the tree
Larger trees may need a stick and rubber band for support
Water each tree and mulch around it to reduce water loss
